I am a child of the 80s. I think that the 80s were totally awesome. I really didn't use that phrase purposefully about the 80s to make readers laugh - I really think they were rad. OK, maybe I used that phrase to be funny. Anyhow, the 80s were so promising! We were all over space, ATARI was taking over living rooms all across America (you know you loved some Pong), ghetto blasters (a.k.a. jam boxes) were blaring A-Ha, Madonna (before she went all wierd-o), Michael Jackson (when he was black), and New Kids. I was trying to channel Cyndi Lauper with my jelly bracelets & wild hair all while wearing Debbie Gibson's "Electric Youth" perfume. Smurfs ruled my Saturday morning, as well as swimming lessons at the local YMCA. MTV played videos - my friends & I would stay up as long as we could possibly hold our eyes open to watch all the music television that we could handle. The 2 Coreys - Haim (RIP) and Feldman - posters plastered my walls - along with Ralph Macchio (Karate Kid) and Michael J. Fox - yeah, I can quote "Back to the Future" with the best of 'em. My cousin & I spent more time on roller skates than we did wearing tennis shoes. I played The Oregon Trail in computer class at school on the Mac - while at home I trudged on with my Commodore 64C, making banners for everyone's birthdays on my dot-matrix printer. Reagan was President. The USA was IT! We ruled the world :) Mr. Gorbachev tore down that wall. "We Are the World" was recorded for the first (and truly only decent) time. We saw Halley's Comet in the 80s for Pete's sake! My Daddy & I watched it from the front yard under the trees. Baby Jessica was rescued from the well - glad for her, even though the footage interruped the season finale of that great show "Rags to Riches". I was going to church camp, singing songs, having a good time, and wanting for nothing....
....except a Snoopy Sno-Cone machine. Yep. A stinking Snoopy Sno-Cone machine. All of those wonderful things in the 80s described above & no Snoopy Sno-Cone machine. Every birthday, every Christmas, every year, the Service Merchandise and/or Sears catalog would come. Those were the days before Excel Spreadsheets, so I would simply circle my wants in the catalog. Every. Single. Holiday. I circled the Snoopy Sno-Cone machine. My cousin got one. She probably didn't even ask for it. For the better part of an entire decade, I circled this Snoopy Sno-Cone machine. To no avail. No one noticed. Or maybe they did and just chose to ignore it because it was a little messy. I assumed no one cared.
I've held a little grudge inside for a while regarding this Snoopy Sno-Cone machine. I kinda was mad at my parents about it...they HAD to know that I wanted it...AND it's not like I was asking for a yacht. It was a $7 gift. So, this has eaten at me for years and years and I've had lots of conversations with Jimmy about it over the 13 years in which we've known one another. He actually thinks it's hilarious that I never got it - grrr - and has joked on me about it a million times. Heck, his whole family knows about my little grudge.
Well, today my dream came true and for a pre-Mother's Day present from Jimmy & W...I was given the gift that I've waited a long, long time for: A SNOOPY SNO-CONE MACHINE!!!! Here's a pic to prove the excitement! Pardon me, I had just worked a 12 hour shift :)

This summer, when it gets really hot, y'all come on over for Snoopy Sno-Cones! I've been waiting to make them for everyone! :)
Oh my goodness! You are SO funny. I love your recap of the 80's...and I CANNOT BELIEVE you included Rags to Riches! I was obsessed with that show! I can still sing many many of the songs.... I used to script it out so my cousins and I could act out scenes and sing the songs for our moms! I totally remember the Baby Jessica rescue interrupting it! It killed me! I can't believe you remember that too! OK, we will have to find one of those shows somewhere and watch it together! And I'm so glad you got your Snoopy Sno-Cone machine. Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteNo way!!!! Kindred spirits :) I thought that I was the only person who remembered Rags to Riches too! AND that Baby Jessica messed it up for us! Awesome! We need to find a re-run somewhere - I bet it's hilarious now. I wanted to be the girl with the big blonde curly hair! Ha ha! :) You're so sweet - it was good to see ya on Saturday!
ReplyDeleteSo nice! You look like a kid on Christmas morning! Too cute! Yay for you!
