License Renewal

I got my Driver's License renewed today. It wasn't a bad picture, really. I finally updated my address & I pretended like the weight listed on there was accurate (maybe for a New Year's Resolution). I was the only one in the line, too. Overall, a great experience. As I looked at my new license, my mind couldn't help but wander to my licenses throughout the years - not counting my fake one....Roll Tide!! πŸ˜‚  In all seriousness, I began to think about the changes of life and the stages of life laid out before me in pictures known as drivers licenses.

I remember my very first license. I remember the day like it was yesterday, really. I was sixteen. I'm pretty sure my mom checked me out a little early. I killed that drivers test and got my pic made. I wore a gold turtleneck. Who the heck wears a turtleneck for their first license pic? I mean, it was 1994, so maybe it was the thing to do. I remember getting into my very own car at my mom's work and telling her "bye" and driving off. Like whaaaat?? As a parent now, I can't even imagine. My mom probably cried in her office. I popped in my CDs and opened the sunroof and drove home. I couldn't believe they had just turned me loose on the road like THAT! I went home, changed clothes & went to cheer practice. We sat on the old stage (which no longer exists) and made signs for the game that Friday. My life suddenly seemed so different.

I remember my license from right after I got married and got the funkiest short hair cut. It was one of my favorite licenses because I felt like a legit adult, with a short hair do, a new house, a job, & a new name. I remember staring at it for hours with my new name...not being able to believe that God had blessed me with this life. Standing at the brink of something so big, feeling like I knew it all, but also knowing I was just winging it...also known as true adulthood.

The license before this current one was kind of humorous. I laughed when I looked at the picture, because I was the only one who knew that I had just nursed my then one year old in the car and left half of my Nursing bra undone, so it was flapping in the breeze. I was also alone, so I had a baby sitting between my feet while I was sitting in the chair trying to smile for the pic and hoping she didn't take that opportunity to take off and ransack the license renewal area. I was so stressed out while I was sitting in that chair. I needed someone to come hold my kid so I could get my stinking license renewed...& to call me out that I didn't even re-hook my bra after Nursing. Who knew that it would end up kind of making me not only smile and laugh at the memory, but also feel like super momma because I handled it like a champ that day...no ransacking occurred, & no one got squirted with milk.

So much has changed since that initial sixteen year old license. The last sign that I made was for my husband's 40th birthday a few weeks ago. I don't own CDs anymore...frankly, my kids think they are artifacts, and I hate turtlenecks. I have gone through several cars and I drive my daughters to practices instead of having practices of my own. My name on my license is different now, and has been for over 15 years. My hair has been 3 different colors and various lengths since then and I have had a few career paths. I go to bed a lot earlier, exercise is a priority, as are facials and serums, and I have turned into a bonafide morning person.

I think this particular renewal hit me hard because I turned 39 a couple of days ago. Birthdays make you think a lot...about who you are and who you want to be. How your life is going, where you want to improve, what you need to ditch, and who really cares about you. I praise God frequently for the people He has placed into my life who love me unconditionally...even when I'm a Debbie downer mess.  I still look around and just feel so blessed with the life He has given me to live and the people He has given me to love. I hope that 39 is my best year yet. I'm striving to love my husband and babies so well. I'm striving to be the best version of me. I'm striving to be true to myself and to my convictions. I'm striving to make more time to be quiet and sit before my Lord. I'm striving to make Him more of a priority and a lot more obvious in my life - because I'm not good at it. I'm striving to know when to be quiet and when to speak up. My husband is the ultimate master at that & I have a lot to learn. I'm striving to show others love and striving to realize that some people just aren't gonna like me, or are going to believe untruths about me, no matter what I do or say, or how contrary I try to live...& that is okay...I'm not saying it is easy for me, but I have to learn to not let it consume me.  It's time to get that lesson....before my next license renewal. I have til 2021.

When I think of today's renewal, I will smile at the thought that I spent the day with my littlest love at bible study, had lunch with my momma and one of my daughters, taste tested Peppermint Bark at Williams Sonoma, & was the ΓΌber for a gymnastics lesson. It is so crazy the way time changes and passes. Things won't be the same next renewal. My bra will most definitely be fastened. My girls will be 9 and 14. I will be rushing to pick them both up at school. Lord willing, I will be a Nurse Practitioner. I will most likely be alone and I won't have to make a courthouse pit stop because a little girl needs to poop. Maybe I will have enough time to have a lunch date with my husband. Each stage is so important and so special. I am thankful to have birthdays and license renewals to help me reflect on every beautiful stage of my life.

As an aside, for those who care...I'm sorry that my blog posts have been so sporadic. I am writing more for research and school projects these days than for blog and entertainment. This will always be my favorite type of writing....I will do my best to not forget about my itty bitty blog! It's like my diary! πŸ’š

Encourage Each Other!

Hey y'all! It's been a hot minute, huh? Yeah, about six months to be exact. I have written about four blog posts since then & deleted them because I have myself convinced that no one would give a crap to read about what I was writing, or that it would be misconstrued, or that it was just too darn personal to shout out to the masses. But, today, here I am. I have composed this one in my brain over the last few days and I've finally gotten some time to share some thoughts with you....and my Momma mentioned that I hadn't blogged in a while. :)

I love personality tests. If you've followed me for a long time or know me well personally, you know this about me. I love for others around me to take them so I can figure out how to best relate to them and love them well. I am an INFJ if you're a Meyers-Briggs junkie like I am. Just thought I'd throw that in there because it's my favorite test and seemingly very accurate. I did just take an enneagram test recommended to me by a friend, and I found it to be interesting as well. So, enough of the sorta digress, but, because I love personality tests and finding more about myself and others, I took a test a bazillion years ago to see what was my spiritual gift. My spiritual gift was overwhelmingly the gift of encouragement. Thus, I became a cheerleader. Okay, maybe that's not exactly why, but it sure helped. Not only did I use my spiritual gift on a football field, but I have continued to use it and to make it a very important part of my career - can you get any more close to a time where you need an encourager than when you are pregnant or laboring? - and I use it daily with my family and friends.

We live in a society that loves to point fingers at one another. A society that is lazy and plays the blame game. We roll our eyes at each other and bad talk what one another is doing when it's not quite what we would have chosen ourselves, and God forbid if we don't look how people think we should or talk how people think we should. I'm guilty. Like super guilty. Sometimes, when you identify as an encourager by nature, these things really get to you in the worst way. I wonder often if I am doing enough encouraging these days. Here's what got me thinking about the topic and why it is so important to me: On Monday, my girls and I went to eat lunch at Panera bread. As we walked in, my oldest child held the door for a lady as she walked in. The lady seemed to barely acknowledge us and just sort of nodded. About ten minutes later, my daughter even made the comment that she had tried to be kind and hold the door for the lady and she didn't say thank you to her. I used it as an opportunity to tell her that we shouldn't expect anything in return, but that we should always just be kind and do what was right and that should be enough in our hearts. Well, as if on cue, about five minutes pass, and the lady comes up to our table. She addresses my girls and tells my oldest "thank you for holding the door for me as I walked in", she looks at my youngest and comments on how she noticed her behaving well at the lunch table. She reached into her purse and gave each of them a light up ring. She looked me in the eye and said "you are doing a wonderful job with these girls. I just wanted you to know". I sat there, stunned for a minute, because us Mommas don't do these kind of things enough to one another. I know I had tears in my eyes as I said "thank you, you don't know how much this means to me". Not only was it an example to my girls on how kindness doesn't go unnoticed, even when you think it does, but it also was a reminder to me of the power of encouragement. Encouraging words speak life. This lady spoke life into me, a weary Momma just trying to get by and raise wonderful people, have a beautiful marriage, be a hard worker who does a good job, be the kind of friend that friends are happy to have, be a present, loving daughter, and show Jesus to the world. Her words have echoed in my head all week long. So much more refreshing than the words that the world wants me to have hammered in my head of how I am not enough or how I am not the kind of person that I should be.

A second thing occurred this week that showed me the power of encouragement. I shared something very important to me with someone that I consider a friend - definitely not a close friend, but a little more than an acquaintance. As I finished telling her, she jumped from her seat and gave me a huge hug and offered some kind words of encouragement. I probably looked shocked, as this person had never hugged me before, but it wasn't a fake hug, it was a legit hug that matched her level of caring about me as a person and genuine caring for what I had shared with her. It was at that moment, after those two encounters with encouragers this week that I have re-thought my spiritual gift as an encourager. I know it is really my gift, but I think that sometimes I get so caught up with the heaviness of my own agenda, to-do list, or issues in my life, that I forget to encourage others enough. I'm good at it with my family and patients, but I think my friends often fall by the wayside because I don't want them to think I'm over the top or that I'm all up in their business. I sometimes am even better at it with strangers - like if I see a Mom breastfeeding in public - you best to bet that I'm gonna send her a fist bump and a high five! So, if you are a friend of mine and need some encouragement - I'm so fired up with encouragement right now, I'd probably do a toe touch for you - or at least a high kick!

Since I feel like some of my blogs ought to end in a challenge or a point sometimes, here it goes: this week, use your encouragement. It may not be your spiritual gift - like (yikes) it is NOT my husband's...but he has several wonderful gifts that I completely am horrible at. That's why God put us together :) Everyone can look someone in the face and be kind or encourage someone to have a good day or be excited for a friend, tell them they are loved, or help them through a hard time. Use your words - they mean so so so much in the lives of others. They can breathe life or they can destroy....but that's a whole 'nother blog. Ha ha.

I'll try not to be so long next time. Writers gotta write :)

The House That Built Me

I'm not much of a Country music fan....I couldn't tell you the latest and greatest stars and hits. I do know the Miranda Lambert song from which I have entitled this blog post. I like it. You won't hear me listening to it, hardly ever, because it makes me cry....but, it seemed a fitting title for my latest entry. If you know me....I mean, those of you who REALLY know me, you know that I'm an (over) thinker, (over) analyzer, & an (over) feeler. It's who I am. So...of course, I feel some sort of way about what happened this week. I say "some sort of way" because not only does it make me sound cool and nonchalant about it, but it really does describe how I feel. My parents moved out of my childhood home this week & the closing was Friday. Just like that, the house that built me belongs to someone else. Someone very nice, I hear, which makes me very, very happy.

I've spent my week (over) thinking about our home, my childhood, & how - despite the fact that I think most Country music is cheese-tastic (or maybe I'm the cheesy one because I use verbiage such as that term), I do believe that that particular house did help to build me. My parents moved into our home before they even had me....and I'm 38, so you do the math. They grew together there, they learned how to be parents there, we learned how to be a family there. The home itself has gone through a few changes over the years...mainly because you can't have dark paneling and orange shag carpet forever & open floor plans became "the thing". Despite all of the changes that it has gone through & how lovely it was after the last update that included knocking some walls out and having Corian countertops, some built ins, & a gas fireplace added - this is how I still view our home:

Here's me....on a typical Christmas morning - I probably was around 6 years old, if I had to guess. See the big brown boxy TV that everyone had? The orange carpet and curtains? Just behind me was a moss rock fireplace that I loved - but my Dad wouldn't hardly ever let us use because he worked with the Volunteer Fire Department & fireplaces led to bad outcomes. This is the house that built me. These are my memories. Of course, if you are going to become an adult (or a sort of adult - because I moved away to college at the age of 17), there are going to be bad or sad memories - but, as I have (over) looked back this week, I haven't thought of any of them as too horrible - only of things that shaped me as a person, us as a family, our trio. Plus, the good memories outweigh any of the bad.

You see those floors? Those are the floors that I practiced standing back tucks on over & over again until it was perfect. That television? On top of it sat our first VCR - the one where the "remote" had a cord attached to it so you could fast forward through the commercials. We spent time around it as a family. I watched and re-watched as they replayed the Challenger disaster. We watched many an Alabama game in that den. We lived in that den during the huge snowstorm where we got almost a foot of snow. I can practically taste the yummy food that we made on a makeshift stove when the power was out, thanks to my Mother. Our Christmas tree was in that den almost every year - even the year that my Mom and I were obsessed with birds & we made ornaments out of tulle and birdseed and had random fake doves shoved in the tree. Oh what memories of Santa coming and me running in there to see what goodies I had gotten. I had many a childhood illness in that den - chicken pox, flu, stomach viruses....and I laid on that couch after having my wisdom teeth removed. That back door, on which a teenage boy, my very first date, knocked. That back porch, where I had birthday parties, high school sorority shindigs, & where my Mom & Dad would diligently clean the concrete with Spic-N-Span. Y'all remember that cleaner? I can still smell it. My swingset was in that backyard. My trampoline was back there - where my friends and I jumped, made up routines, tumbled, & worked on our jumps until we were pleasantly tired or scared away by the large St Bernard that lived up the street. My Dad's workshop - where he lovingly made pieces of furniture that have been in every home that Jimmy and I  have had as a married couple. My rope swing was back there, my Dad made it & I loved it. Not just for swinging, sometimes I sat there and read and listened to my ghetto blaster playing Beastie Boys "Licensed to Ill" - until my parents realized it said "damn" & talked about drinking beer. Ha ha.

Our kitchen. My Mother created her amazing pound cakes there. Y'all know my Mom is an awesome cook. She said she didn't know how to cook before she married...so, I know a lot of her expertise was learned in that kitchen. She made me milk with food coloring in that kitchen when I was a kid, so I would drink milk. We made Hardee's biscuits on Saturdays in that kitchen, which cartoons were playing on TV. Saturday night growing up was the night to grill steaks. My grandmother would come eat with us & sometimes I would have a friend over. My Mom made salads. In that kitchen was where I opened the mail that announced my acceptance to University of Alabama and later to graduate school at University of Montevallo. I've played a zillion games of Yahtzee on hot summer nights with my then boyfriend, now husband at that bar while we listened to the scanner where you could hear people's cordless phone conversations & you could know where the next ambulance was headed. He lived with my parents for several months while working a job near their home. The orange rotary dial phone was in that kitchen - the one where Santa called me to tell me that he was bringing me a daybed, but it was too big to be set up, so it would have to be done by my parents later.

Our dining room had a chandelier in it when I was a little girl. My Mom used to take down all of the crystals & I would hold them up to my ears and pretend like I was wearing fancy dangling earrings. I remember her cleaning them. I remember my Mom using that table to sit and balance the checkbook. I remember her typing papers for my uncle when he was in college while sitting at that table. We had refreshments and cake on that table when I graduated from High School and again from College. My fondest memory of the dining room was when Jimmy told me he loved me for the first time. We were sitting on the (hideous) carpet and it was late at night. I remember it like it was yesterday. Adjoining to the dining room was the living room. I practiced piano in there (obviously not enough, because today I suck and can't play). I remember door-to-door vacuum salesmen coming to our home and trying to see us crap in that room. Our very first computer (Commodore 64C) sat in the living room at a desk for a while. I was a writer even then. I would sit at the computer and compose stories about princesses & animals. No memory compares to the one that occurred while I was laying on the horrendous green couch in the living room. I was alone and I was seven years old. It was there that I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior. My babysitter was in the other room. It was just me and God. I remember being so excited to share with my parents when they arrived home that night & how I felt like something huge had happened in my life.

The hallway closet was our saving grace a few times. It served as our tornado shelter. One night, in particular, it got bad. My Dad is the typical Southern guy...you know, if there's a tornado coming, you go out on your porch! I mean, what else is there to do? Check it out for yourself! He always would say "aw, we'll be aight" or "its gonna be a little North of us". Well, this night, he said "get in the closet". Pretty scary words when you're a little kid. It was loud in there, we were smushed like sardines. My dad had a radio on to listen to the weather & an old 70s song was playing. Even then, I thought, 'seriously? where's the weather report?'. Did I mention that it was loud? Kinda sounded like a freight train (so cliche, huh?) When we emerged, it was pretty obvious that the tornado went through our front yard. We even had to spend the night somewhere for a couple of nights after that....but we were safe.

My mom taught me how to put on eyeshadow in that bathroom. She taught me how to use a water pik & how to wash my face. She re-fixed my hair for prom after the redneck lady jacked it up and I cried... this may have happened more than one year. I put my makeup on at that counter as I prepared to walk in graduation for my Master's degree. I used to sit on the counter and put my feet in the sink and talk to her as she got ready for work during the summers when I was old enough to stay home alone. She kept my pink foam rollers in a basket in the cabinet under the sink in that bathroom & she would roll my hair when I was a little girl using them. I used to wear my bathing suit and pretend like I was swimming in the bathtub when it was hot outside & there was no where for me to go swimming.

My bedroom holds all kind of secrets - like most bedrooms where teenage girls were raised do. I was a little girl in that bedroom, playing school with intercoms, playing Parisians (old school, huh?). The white paneling walls of my childhood held taped posters of a young girl beginning to like boys - the safe ones - you know Jon Bon Jovi, Michael J Fox, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Ralph Macchio, New Kids on the Block. As a Mom, I know that my Mother probably wanted to kill me for the tape on her walls, but as a former kid, it was amazing :) I cried in my room over mean girls, stupid things, & stupid people. I declared (more than once) in there that my parents were "ruining my life" or "just didn't understand". I was in my room when I received phone calls telling me of the deaths of a few close friends - one of which was one of my very best friends. I mourned some personal failures in that room....but I also celebrated personal victories in there as well. I remember talking on one side of my Swatch phone while my bff talked on the other side and we talked to folks way later than we should've. We watched cheerleading championships and gymnastics that we had recorded over and over and over in that room. I spent the night in my childhood room the night before my wedding. Not surprisingly, I (over) thought it and cried - not for sadness, but excitement and happiness....and because I'm an idiot and read the Nicholas Sparks book "A Walk to Remember".

Our home now belongs to someone else....and it's okay. You can see that I have so much happy in that home. God gave our trio something special. I feel blessed to have had such a steady, loving home. I feel proud that my parents had bedtime devotionals with me in their bedroom for years and years as I was growing up. I always walked into that home knowing what it would feel like. It would feel like a huge hug, a sigh of relief, comfortable - it would feel like love. I walked into that home for the last time at the beginning of the month & nothing was different. Everything was different, really, but then again, nothing was. I think one of the biggest gifts that we, as parents can give to our children, is stability, love, and for them to know that when they return home from where ever they have been that day, that they will walk into a calm, safe place that is surrounded by the love of a family and the love of Christ. My parents succeeded in that. They didn't do it alone. I know they prayed a lot. Especially for me, when I was going through hard times, & for each other - because you do not get a marriage like theirs without the Lord.  They made that house at 8113 Cowley Circle a home for almost 40 years. A beautiful home. It wasn't large by the world's viewpoint - but by the standards of God and of the hearts of those that it touched - it was a mansion. So, thank you Mom & Dad - thank you for being you and for loving not only me, but every friend that I ever brought into that home - because I know that they felt it when they were there, too. I'm glad that my precious husband and our baby girls got time to play there and enjoy the love in your home, too. You did good.

Because I began it with a song title....I'm going to end it with a lyric - the other one that has been in my head all week, because I tend to (over) think & (over) analyze until I get completely sad. There's no sadness - you should never be sad for memories and things that have passed. You should smile because God allowed you to have all of them....and in the words of Semisonic's "Closing Time" - Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end. To say that I'm excited for our new beginning would be an understatement! Just a couple of months til Mom and Dad hit our town!! Woot woot!! Now, does anyone local wanna be their friends?? :)

New Year...Not Really a New Me

I suppose I can still write about New Years resolutions...we just flipped to double digits today, right? Well, here's the deal...I've been wracking my brain, praying, & thinking about my New Year's Resolutions & I have come to a conclusion. I'm not referencing those people who have BIG, lifestyle altering things that they need to change for health or safety, okay, I'm referencing myself and maybe even some of you reading. I have decided that my goal in 2017 is to just be me...the best version of me...I have some things to clean up, we all do, but to just be me, and be cool with the fact that it's just perfect.

God made us who we are for a reason. He made cooking not my specialty, but He made art one of my talents. He made me crave alone time or time with a small group of friends instead of big group parties, and He made me like cold weather over hot. He even made me be a little too sentimental & too over the top about football. But, you know what? He doesn't make mistakes & He is proud of His work.

My mom told me years ago that the closer you get to 40, the less you care what others think about you. This has been a struggle for me as long as I can remember having any struggles. This is the year that I begin to cast that aside & embrace who I am. The person that God made and loves, quirks, annoyances, & shortcomings included. I have a couple of close groups of friends & my super sweet Little family to whom I can tell the absolute truth & who will be there no matter what & have proven just that. To those peeps, you're my people, & I will commit to love you more than ever this year. I am committing to be the best version of Amy that I can be ☺️ So, if you want me to put it into terms...I'm gonna cook a little more (you heard that before?), read a lot more, I have a personal running goal (that I won't share, because if I fail, I don't want you to know- bc I care what you think...& apparently, I need to work on that part) πŸ˜‚. I'm going to read my Bible and pray more & pray bigger and bolder prayers. I'm shooting to be the best wife and Mom that I can be - in the perfect way that was meant for me and for my people that God has given me. I'm going to write things down more - because my brain forgets stuff after having a couple of kids. I'm going to decorate my house (& the outdoors) more and change cleaning products - because I am crunchy. And I'm going to write down my travel bucket list so we can start crossing things off!

Here's something that I loved...I'm going to let it guide me into 2017. I wish everyone the very super best 2017 & ask you to look at what God gave you. It's probably pretty cool, it may need to be cleaned up a little, but being something you're not or changing things because someone or some group doesn't approve is for the birds. Cause you are loved. Very, very much. Maybe not by the person/people that are haters, but what importance are they anyway if they don't love you back? I say it again. Look around. You. Are. Loved. Find those people and love them fiercely. And your God. He loves you fiercely. Love Him back. πŸ’šπŸ˜

Let's go win 2017...by just being who God made us to be!! I'm going right now to love my husband and kids. πŸ’š

The Time that my Kids Tore Down Belk

A few weeks ago, I made a Facebook post about my precious youngest child who knocked down 4 big racks of clothes at the local Belk. I promised the whole backstory...so, for your reading pleasure, & to get a big laugh out of my Momma misery, here ya go! πŸ˜‚

Let's begin by prefacing that I tried everything that I could to make it an easy breezy trip. I really did. I played Candy Land with the kid, I played Barbies, let her watch a little TV, took her and her sister to get slushies during Happy Hour at Sonic before we hit the Belk. I tried so hard. It should be a mutualistic relationship. I give to you and you give to me. Weeeeell. That's not quite how it emerged. I had to drop by my work and pick up some cookie dough that I had bought...and apparently, my sweet co-workers could see the writing on the wall that my youngest was gonna get crunk at the Belk. Deep down, I probably knew too, but I hoped beyond hope that she would have mercy on me and remember how kind I had been all day. Straight up Mary Poppins!!

The story wouldn't be as funny if I didn't tell on myself a little. So, we wheel up to Belk...and there's an absolute rockstar parking place. I see someone coming out of it, so I stalk them before turning into it. Have you ever just kinda misjudged a turn in? Okay...like really misjudged? Well, that happened to me in this instance. This rockstar parking place just happened to be next to a curb. With a tree. Right in front of the Belk - you know, so everyone can see you. So, I misjudged a slight bit & next thing you know...I am hitting two wheel motion - not three - like I have hydraulics. My SUV was tilted. I looked like I could've been on a Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg video from the early/mid 90s. I thought I may just be able to back up a little, move forward a little, and fix it. Oh but no, someone was in front of me, so I couldn't move much. And when I would put my foot on the gas just a little, it would revvvvv up and my (2) wheels would sorta spin in the grass. My kids were screaming "MOMMA! What are you doing"???? There were folks staring....like I was an idiotic lunatic who was about to start bouncing in the hydraulic car. I turned the radio down and told my kids to please be quiet (Mary Poppins is slowly floating away) & somehow, by the grace of the Lord, I got myself out of 90s ghetto stance and wheeled correctly into the rockstar spot. As I turned the car off, I looked in the backseat & my oldest child has removed her glasses & is looking around back and forth. I look at her & ask why in the world her glasses were off...and in her precious, 9 year old voice, she informs me that she is trying to change the way she looks so people won't know it is her in the car!!! My girl is embarrassed of her momma!!! 😳😭 I told her to put em back on & let us go in. She begged me to stay in the car "for five more minutes" so that everyone who might have seen could clear out! Ha ha ha!!! Bless her heart!!

Well...I took this five minute opportunity to lay a couple of ground rules for the Belk trip. First being - thou shalt not touch a mannequin. Last trip (where I swore that I would never return to Belk with children), my precious baby C honked the private part of a male mannequin. I lost my serious Mom face on that one and accidentally lol-ed. So, we had a huge conversation about how it was inappropriate and wrong and how mommy was wrong to laugh. Second rule - stay close to Mommy. Don't get out of my sight. Third - if I ask you to do something, please do it right then. Fourth - does anyone have to pee?? Answer was unanimous: no. Cool. So, we go in.

Walk through the doors. I see C eyeing a mannequin. She runs up and touches her shoes and comments on how pretty they are. Okay...yeah, they are pretty, but we can't touch mannequins, right? Yes mommy, right. We get on the escalator. Success. Everyone acted right. Then we take a right, to the Big and Tall section. That's where things began to fall apart - no pun intended. Ha ha!

There I am. I'm squatted down by the Ralph Lauren button downs, searching for a Large Tall. My kids were beside me, but then they weren't anymore. Then I heard the biggest crash on Earth and looked up in time to see four racks of big and tall jackets & sweatshirts falling one after another like dominoes. Y'all! Do you realize how big Big and Tall clothing are?? We have 4XBig sizes of huge puffy jackets strewn all over the floor. My kids scurried out of the racks like roaches when someone turned the lights on. Baby C's eyes were so wide that I thought they were gonna pop out of her head. She put her fingers in her mouth...which she has never done in her life. She knew it was MAJOR. My biggest was going "momma, oh my gosh, momma, I just don't know what happened". Here I stand, in a Mount Everest of clothing, humiliated and angry. I'm desperately trying to get these racks off the ground and clean this hot mess up before I get kicked out of Belk. It did cross my mind to take a pic or snap...but I thought it may be totally disrespectful- especially because a lady (not an employee) came to help me. She looked to be a grandma. I was on the verge of blowing up like a volcano. I looked at my kids & you know that Momma voice that comes from the pit of your stomach...it sounds like what you think Satan might sound like if you were to hear him speak. Yes. That one. It came out. I said "don't move, don't talk, don't touch anything EVER again"!!!! I think the grandmotherly lady thought I was about to need a Social Services consult, so she tried to reel me in by saying "it's okay! The racks were loaded down too much anyway. It's no big deal. One day you'll look back and laugh at the memory". I told her that I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She helped me clean up. My kids tried to help too. Bless em.

They were on their best behavior for about five minutes. My husband face timed me to see if I had found anything for him at Belk & I told him there had been the major incident & the kids were off tha chain. He works about 20 minutes from Belk, but I think he sensed that I was hanging by a thread, so it was 15 minutes until quitting time anyway, so he just came on over. After I had a pile of clothes to pick from, they suddenly decided they had to pee - simultaneously - right then. So, we went to pee & as we are walking up, the littlest is talking at 250dB & throwing herself on the ground and laughing.

My husband rolled up at the right time to see the debacle & stepped in to try to remedy the situation. That's when we looked down and saw my little creative presh hanging on desperately to the leg of a table that held men's pants, declaring that she was a "koala hanging on to bamboo". God bless her, we had to laugh, because that is exactly what she looked like.

We buy what we need & Jimmy took them for a ride on the train while I went into a store alone. I'm not quite sure that C stopped talking the entire trip. We had reservations for dinner & when we showed up, the restaurant suddenly decided to tack 20 more minutes onto the wait time. Um...I thought that's why you had reservations? 😳 Anyway, we went to eat at another place. It went relatively well...until C tried to touch the sizzling fajita platter, cried every time we talked to her, or talked over us so no one could converse. Then, as it was time to go...she Beelines for the emergency exit & almost sets off the alarm. The people sitting next to us called out "ma'am, ma'am"! I'm like - yeah, I see her. I'm really thinking, I'm just weak by this point. Let her set it off. Ha ha. After we pay, we all get outside & as we are walking off, c is riding on her daddy's shoulders & makes the statement of the night. Apparently the previous two hours didn't mean a thing to her, because, she said "I have been SO GOOD today that we should go get some ice cream"!!! Let me let you guess....ha. No, that did not happen. Not a chance!!

It was a pretty darn embarrassing night. Parenthood keeps you humble. You can't look cool while standing on a mound of downed racks of big and tall puffy jackets and sweatpants. You can't look cool chasing a kid to the emergency exit...& you sure can't look cool walking behind a kid who is throwing themselves down on the ground for kicks and giggles! In her defense...she was asleep before we got five miles down the road. Sleepiness makes this child behave in crazy ways!

I really decided to finally write this blog tonight after a friend posted on FB about how so many Moms always look so perfect and pretty with their homes clean and sparkly and their kids in matchy clothing. I feel like we all do each other a disservice by acting like we are all perfect 24/7. So I make it my mission to be real. I humiliated myself at Belk when I looked like Snoop's girlfriend hitting the hydraulics & my precious kids are out of control sometimes. But...that's life...and it makes for GREAT stories and great lessons on God's grace...you know, when your voice sounds like it came from the pits of you-know-where! Ha ha! Keep on keepin on Mommas....I see you & I love you!!! It's tough in these trenches!!

A Little Invention Called Uber

If you follow me on FB & IG, you know that my hubby and I just got back from a just-the-two-of-us adventure to mark an item off of my bucket list! We went to Boston! We both are huge History people & count our vacations around seeing neat places in History - like Normandy, France (not once, but twice)! We love to see where big things happened & to see pivotal moments in the history of our nation (and world) at their exact locations. So, this was another stop along our trek! It was absolutely amazing - and fun - and too fast! We also spent time in Salem, MA - home of the Salem Witch Trials - another crazy historical place (which it's still hard for me to believe that insanity happened). We saw Harvard & Wellesley Colleges & Lexington & Concord! Lots of stuff packed into a 3 day jaunt. But, we can't pawn our kids off for too long! Ha ha. Really...I didn't want to blog about the trip itself, because y'all saw a ton through FB & IG....but, I wanted to share a new city adventure with y'all.

So, my husband started a new job in September. He loves it a whole lot...but he's pushing the big 4-0 and he has several "millenials" working for him - and people who have adapted to the younger generation super well. It's kinda cute. He's learned a lot from them...like he has these new apps on his phone that they have shown him, he asked for a backpack to put his laptop in for his birthday. He has been to Pints & Pixels here in town...which, what the heck??? I've been trying to hang out in the Nintendo Room to get my old school Mario Bros. on at Pints & Pixels for months now & he's kicking it with the younger generation all up in there for lunch! Where's my invite? Anyway, he went on a business trip and comes home with a couple of new apps & he shows me the Uber app & explains it to me & tells me that they Uber-ed (is that a new verb?) all over San Antonio & it was phenomenal & so much cheaper than a taxi. Uh, okay. Whatever floats your boat, right?? I listened & smiled big because I love him & when he is happy, I am too. I thought this was the end of my relationship with Uber. Oh, but no, it wasn't!!!

So, when we were in Boston, we needed to get from Boston to Salem. According to my itinerary, (have you ever been on a trip with me? It's quite comical - because this girl LOVES an itinerary! I could be a travel agent if I needed some extra $$!!) we were supposed to catch the Fast Ferry from Boston to Salem. Well...when you are two working adults who NEVER get a break and NEVER sleep late, it was just too tempting, so, we missed the ferry :( The next ferry ran a couple of hours later, but we didn't want to waste the day, so I look over & there's Jimmy, on his Uber app. He says, "they can be here in 5 minutes & it will be a 30 minute drive". I told him no. I told him that I thought Uber was shady as heck. You're getting in the car with a random, people!!! A random. Didn't your parents tell you not to do that??? If you hung out with me in the 90's, didn't you know that I was the queen of what we now call Uber?? I loved to get in the car with a friendly random! Sorry, Mom & Dad. Not my finest moments - Roll Tide!!! Some of  you reading were sitting right next to me in the fake uber. Ha ha. I would DIE if I knew my girls were riding with a random! Anyway, my husband spent time assuring me that this is all completely legit & that the app had a track on us...you know, in case the driver is the next Dahmer or Gacy. What the mess?? So, now that I'm an adult with good judgment, I had to push past the ridiculousness of it all & climb in the Uber. ...and that's just what we did.

Uber #1. Hop in. The car is crazy clean. This is when I realize that I could never be an Uber driver. "Excuse me, Madam, just sit in between the booster & the car seat. Yeah, kick last week's coloring sheet to the side & watch that pop tart remnant, I wouldn't want it to get on your dress. Oh, this song...yeah, it's Radio Disney. That wet on your ear? It's my labrador retriever in the back of the SUV". HA HA HA #momlife. I digress. It is the tidiest car that I've ever seen. The driver speaks a little of my language, but not a ton...which is cool, I'm not trying to chat it up, I'm planning my escape in case he goes full Manson on us. The radio is playing & it is freaking hysterical. It's Celine Dion, maybe her greatest hits, some slow instrumentals, some Josh Groban, & a really slow sad song that I couldn't place. I texted my friend Ashley & my dad & told them where we were, where we were headed, & what was on the radio - you know, in case we died. Then, right before we got out at Salem, we bonded a little. The Uber driver offered us some gum. Jimmy jumped on it, I hesitated, because it went through my mind that it may be laced with Molly or LSD, but, I took some...and stayed sober. I shouldn't have been such a skeptic & should've rolled with the kindness. We survived Uber #1 :)

Uber #2.  We get finished at Salem & decide that Uber was quick and fairly cheap, so if we wanted to see more things that day, we should just Uber back. Jimmy's an ole pro by now & has me up in another Uber before I can think of BTK or any other serial killer. Another insanely clean vehicle. However, this guy, he has tried entirely too hard to make it smell good. I felt like he had just emerged from a pool of cologne - I tried to come up with a reference here, but I don't even know what cologne is currently "cool". The smell is pungent. Then he has 3 (yes three) christmas tree air fresheners hanging from his rearview mirror. AND, he has sprayed some (NASTY) stuff in there to make it smell good. Y'all. I don't get headaches. Not prone to them, haven't ever had a problem with them. At about 8 miles down the road, I was nauseated and about to see lights flashing before my eyes. I can imagine that this is close to what a migraine feels like. I couldn't hardly keep my eyes open - because they were burning from all of the scents. He may have been trying to cover up for something, because his music of choice was gangster rap. It did kinda make me happier than the sadness of Groban from Uber #1. We listened to (uncensored) versions of 50 Cent, Tupac, & Snoop. It would've been a hysterical situation if I didn't feel like I needed a Phenergan & an Imitrex. But, we survived Uber #2.

Uber #3. This one got us to the airport on the day we were leaving. I wasn't on edge as much this time. Maybe because I was sleepy & my senses weren't as heightened. He also picked us up in a minivan. Not a creeper rapist van, but a Town & Country. Serial killers don't drive Town & Countries...do they?? I'm pretty sure the Zodiac drove a beat up something. We hopped on in. This guy didn't speak our language either. I could speak a few words of his....although I didn't try. We listened to Salsa music all the way to the airport. By the time I got out, I was happy, but wanted some chips and queso :) I kinda felt like an ole pro myself as we got out of Uber #3. And, we did get everywhere safely & there were no Ted Bundy emulates that got us.

I still think Uber is a little on the shady side. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't use it alone. I'm going to listen to the teachings of my parents, since I ignored in the late 90s - ha ha. But, it did get us where we needed to go - and it provided good fodder for a story - which you KNOW that I love!! So, overall, yay for Jimmy and his newfound millenial apps. He may Uber, have a backpack, & go to Pints & Pixels every now and again, but I promise with every fiber of my being, that he won't give in to skinny jeans!!! :)

What I LOVE right now....Fall edition

It's my favorite time of year! The colors are so rich, the weather is finally getting right....except, we do need a little more rain and I would love about 10 degrees cooler for the high, but I'm a heck of a lot happier than I was when the 90 degree days wouldn't leave us alone. So, y'all know my birthday is in this month. Usually, I do a lot of (over) thinking about life, its past, present, & future - relationships, friendships, what I want to make part of my 38th year and what I need to dump. Like I wrote in my last blog, it's just a time for renewal. Anyway, in all that (over) thinking, I've developed some strong opinions...& one of my goals for my 38th year is to be a little more vocal about my thoughts and a little less obsessed with what others may think. It's one of my hugest downfalls & many of my friends who have hit the big 4-0 already, tell me that the worry about others thoughts decrease at this point...so I'm working on a head start for my 38th year. Well...for a fun way to head start it, I'm rounding up a few of my absolute fave things right now to share with you. And - news flash - if you think they are whack or dumb, I don't care! Okay...so, I'm gonna half smile and really try not to care or feel like you won't like me anymore. Ha ha. Kidding. (Sorta).

Thing one. I am OBSESSED with red hair!! I've been slightly obsessed with it for over a year, but my hair guy was like "no way" last fall/winter. So, this year, I brought a pic & I'm not sure if he just decided to call my bluff or if he was truly down with it, but I had some red put in & I love it! I want more! We all know I am a blonde at heart & it will show back up in the summer, but for now I am in love with it & with all things red!!!

Eeek!!!! πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸŽƒ

Thing 2. Y'all know how much I LOVE music! It makes you feel some sort of way. I love lyrics and what they mean, and I think that my youngest is gonna be just like me 😬. She quotes lyrics and says "Momma, what does that mean"? Crazy, huh? There's 4 songs I'm digging now & 3 are alike and the 4th is completely different. I'm in love with "Gold" by Kiiara; "Karma Police" by Radiohead; "Wait up for Me" by Amos Lee; & "Home" by Blue October. Check em out! Yeah, I hear you....Karma Police is so dang old. Whatever. You know the Karma Police is still in business πŸ˜πŸ˜‚. I have eclectic taste!

Thing 3. New England. I'm obsessed with New England. Not the Patriots, although, they are okay, but the place. The vibe, the colors, the history!!!!, the way I dream that it feels to visit there in the fall...so, what am I gonna do about it?? Take that trip!! That's my birthday gift from my big love! We are headed to Boston & Salem and I couldn't be more excited to live out my dream trip in the fall colors and temps! I'm gonna wear my Hunter boots and my scarf and warm clothes and eat Boston cream pie and cannolis Ronny hearts content. And spend a little special time with my guy πŸ’šπŸπŸ˜. Can't hardly wait. Although, the law has been laid down that I must only bring a carry on....so, cross your fingers, peeps. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜¬

Thing 4. Lipsense. Have y'all tried it?? So, my friend Shawn sells it. It's this lipstick that stays on forever and ever. Like a really long time. It's sorta expensive, but it's gonna last a long time because you only use it once a day! I have 2 colors and a gloss. One color is super bright & is way out of my plain Jane box & the other color is right up my alley & is neutral as the day is long (it's called Bombshell & Jennifer Aniston wears it). Love!!

Thing 5. My kindle. Yeah, I'm a book purist, so it's tough for me. But, one of my New Years goals was to read more & if I was going to accomplish this without breaking the bank & having excess clutter of books I would never re-read, I had to jump into this century and get a touch screen kindle (embarrassingly, I had the old school one that didn't do the touch anything). Yikes. So, I've been getting back in the reading game. It makes me feel a little less foggy and dumb. Smart folks read, right? It's like an exercise for your mind! And it makes me one step closer to being able to have just a carry on on my trip. πŸ˜‚

Thing 6. You aren't gonna believe it. You know that I blogged about the sadness when I favorite candle was discontinued & how I spent ridiculous amounts of money buying bootleg ones on eBay so I could have my scent back. Weeeeellll. I had some time to kill in b&bw last weekend & (drum roll), some marketing GENIUS has relaunched MY CANDLE under a different name, color, & packaging. But the scent is the exact same!!!! So...when you see it, it's called "Winter Cedar". It's now in a blue jar & it is white, but it is BACK!!! You know you wanna come over and smell it!!! πŸ’šπŸ˜˜

Thing 7. Moto Leggings. The denim like material kind. Ladies...do you have any??? I have 2 pair & I think they rock! I think they go with anything. They look good with my boots and they give me a little old school vibe...which I dig! They come in all colors. Check em!!!

Thing 8. "This Is Us". It's on Tuesday nights on NBC. Y'all know I don't really have a show since Nashville got the boot & we are waiting on CMT to reload it. I boycotted "The Voice" this season because Miley is ridiculous. "Intervention" is on hiatus & our guilty pleasure "Naked & Afraid" is too. So, I started watching this show and it it AMAZING!!! I was an old school fan of "ER" & "Greys Anatomy" (before it jumped the shark), & drama/sitcoms before this crazy generation got a hold of TV.  I love shows that are relatable and make you love the characters and feel at home and nostalgic. I feel like reality TV ruined all of that, so this is heartwarming. If you don't at least tear up while watching, well, you're a jerk. Ha ha. The storyline leaves you begging for more!

Thing 9. Now that I've ripped this generation's version of TV, I'm gonna just go all whole hog on you and tell you that I'm obsessed with the 70s right now. I'm reading 70s history stuff, watching documentaries about the 70s, listening to 70s southern rock music, buying 70s inspired clothing, digging 70s colors, & wanting old school Tupperware in my house. Maybe I'm trying to reclaim my childhood. Ha ha! I'm obsessed with wondering if we all lived like kids did in the 70s again, if things would be different now in our world. Who knows? That's just the junk I think about!

Thing 10. This goes without saying. I am obsessed with all things football right now! I've gotten a new Bama shirt & some lucky panties. I'm twitter stalking again & changing my schedules all around so we can watch every single game! It's my absolute favorite time of year!!! And now...I can burn my good candles and it's finally chilly enough to come with some Fall recipes for our family and friends! It's on!!! πŸ’šπŸ’š

That's my top 10 things I LOVE right now!!! What do y'all love?? What do I need to check out?? Got any fun ideas for Boston or for my kindle? Wanna smell my candle and listen to my music?? Ha ha. What a fun, lighthearted blog to head to year 38!! None of y'all are hating on me...I'm absolutely sure of it!!! πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ’š
