I didn't watch the Miss America pageant. I boycott all type of pageants because I am a recovering anorexic & they make me feel all sort of bad ways...but, that's a whole different conversation. I did, however, watch the monologue by Miss Colorado on being "just a nurse" via You Tube. It made me cry...because that is my profession. Those are my people. Those are my thoughts, emotions, & version of a story that all of us can recall.
Well, then that darn Joy Behar gets on her television show and busts Miss Colorado down for her "costume" and her "doctor's stethoscope". For reals? I don't even know how to reply or to respond! So, as I've thought about it, I've decided to make a list of what I think that Joy Behar wishes for her workday & what my profession wishes for their workdays and just let it sink in for a bit. I bet there will be no argument.
Joy Behar's Workday wishes
-For my dressing room to be a perfect 70 degrees.
-To have only blue m&m's in my dressing room. As well as Fiji water - tepid temperature.
-For my coffee to be made, with 2 lumps of sugar & pumpkin spice creamer. In my favorite mug, sitting on my vanity, waiting on me.
-For my makeup artist to have a steady hand
-For me to not have any boogers in my nose while on national TV
-For me to not break a heel on my Jimmy Choo's while walking onstage.
-For the lights to not make me sweat
-For me to not have to hug a stinky audience member.
-To not have to sit next to that God awful conservative new girl, Candace Cameron Bure.
-For taping not to run late, cause I have a spa appointment.
What people in the Nursing Profession Wish for their workday:
-For my patient to not die today.
-If I have to do chest compressions, let my body be strong, & not give out.
-For me to not have to witness someone receiving a life changing diagnosis today.
-For me to be able to sleep tonight for thinking of my patients and their families.
-For me to give the right medications, to know all potential side effects, & recognize allergic reactions quickly.
-For me to be able to start an IV on the first try...be it on a helicopter, the back of an ambulance, a newborn, a hemorrhaging woman, or someone seizing, or someone receiving chemotherapy.
-For me to successfully dodge all bodily fluids on my scrubs so I can meet my family after work for hamburgers with a smile on my tired face.
-For me to posess grace, compassion, & professionalism in the face of a patient who is being unkind to me, cursing me or spitting upon me, or attempting to hit me.
-For me to know the right words to say to comfort my patients and their family during scary situations.
-If I witness someone's last breath, may I offer them complete dignity.
-For me to get one of the doughnuts that the anesthesiologist brought to the nurses today (okay...maybe that's just for me only).
-For me to be able to witness the miracle of birth & witness the making of a family with no complications. And if there are complications, may I move swiftly and confidently to help.
-For me to accurately be the eyes and ears of the physician & note any slight change from the normal, or even sometimes, just report my gut feeling correctly and quickly.
-For me to educate my patient appropriately about their diagnosis so that they can know how to care for themselves at home & understand when to call for help.
-For my knees and my back to be strong and not give out, so I can continue doing this job that I love.
I could go on...really, I could. I think it's obvious. Entertainment is cool...I enjoy it...but check out what nurses do. How can you slight that?!? Nurses are in the trenches. We see life at its best & it's worse. We see it at its beginning and it's end. Unimaginable highs & even more unimaginable lows. I am proud to be a nurse. I am proud of my profession & the strong, smart, innovative men and women that make us up. I also know, you don't wanna mess with nurses!! I think Joy Behar just barked up the wrong tree!!! Yikes!!!
And...Joy Behar. I can save your life & your baby's life & then go out in my Jimmy Choo's, feeling like a million bucks!!! Boom!!!
